Jaarringen – Oerol - 2006
As an ode to 25 years of Oerol at Terschelling, a ground sculpture with a diameter of 400 meters, consisting of 25 annual rings was created.
For three weeks two excavators dug, in which each grain of sand is no more than eight meters moved. While the excavation of the sculpture, nature already started the breakdown.
During every evening of the festival theatrical guided walks were conducted in the sculpture, accompanied by live music. Where participants were both actor and spectator. Starting at the dunes, with an impressive view on the annual rings, the three groups of audiences walked as it became darker to the main center. Here a theatrical performance of movements concluded the walk, a final act. Within four months the wind and water eroded the sculpture leaving the beach to reassume her original form.
The whole process has been registered on video. The artist Rob Sweere situated his project Silent Sky-13 in the annual rings. In the 7 middle rings of the sculpture, 2000 friends of Oerol and festival visitors were staring at the sky in silence for half-an-hour. The aerial photo of this event has become the icon for the 25th anniversary of Oerol.
