LangsteLenteLicht – Overijssels channel - 2008
The Friday before Eastern 2008 at full moon, the festival of lights, a thousand lanterns and three thousand torches were placed and ignited by the inhabitants of Salland
along the 20-kilometer long Overijssels channel from Deventer to Lemelerveld.
More than two thousand volunteers participated in the project ‘LangsteLenteLicht’ (longest licht of spring). For the twenty bridges of the channel, bridge teams were formed all being responsible for the organization of their bridge and the area halfway up to the next bridge. Severe weather conditions, which lasted until a few hours before the start of the project, almost cancelled the event. But just in time, at that particular moment it was dry, windless and even the full moon showed up. Afterwards small bridge parties were organized for which a poem, especially written for the occasion, was recited. The key to the projects success was appointing a foreman to manage over each bridge and enlisting others to participate. In this way people were personally engaged and they in turn mobilized family, friends and colleagues. For people who experienced the festival of light, the image of the channel is changed forever. Also a short-filmed impression of the project was created.
